If you or a loved one will be driving this Thanksgiving holiday weekend, you’ll need to be aware that the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has announced it will increase patrols throughout the state. The increased trooper presence begins on Wednesday, November 26th and will run through Sunday, November 30th.
Law enforcement personnel will be looking for drivers committing traffic violations, including not wearing seat belts, driving while intoxicated, speeding, failing to follow the state’s Move Over, Slow Down law and other violations.
The increase in DPS patrols will run in conjunction with the nationwide Operation CARE (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort) initiative, which is a coordinated effort by law enforcement agencies to reduce fatalities related to impaired driving, distracted driving, and other violations during peak holiday travel times.
If you have plans and they involve alcohol, it’s imperative to have a designated driver or use a third-party transportation service such as Uber, Lyft or a taxi.
For those driving, take extra precautions to ensure the safety of you and others, which include buckling up, refraining from phone use, keeping both hands on the wheel, and avoiding distractions.
Last year during the same Thanksgiving holiday period, DPS troopers issued 45,770 citations and warnings, including 4,082 for speeding. Troopers also arrested 162 individuals for DWI and 206 for other felony charges.
Don’t become a statistic in 2025! Use good judgment and make wise decisions.
