If you or a loved one will be driving this Labor Day weekend, you need to be aware that the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has announced that it has increased patrols and will be on the lookout for intoxicated drivers, distracted drivers, as well as those violating speed limit, seat belt and other traffic laws. The increased trooper presence will run now through Labor Day Monday, September 4h.
DPS will also be enforcing the Move Over, Slow Down law, which requires drivers to move over a lane or slow to 20 mph below the posted speed limit when approaching emergency vehicles, law enforcement, tow trucks, utility service vehicles, TxDOT vehicles or other highway construction or maintenance vehicles using visual signals or flashing lights activated on the roadside.
If you have plans and they involve alcohol, it’s imperative to have a designated driver or use a third-party transportation service such as Uber, Lyft or a taxi.
For those driving, take extra precautions to ensure the safety of you and others, which include buckling up, refraining from smart phone use, keeping both hands on the wheel and avoiding distractions.
During the 2022 Labor Day holiday enforcement period, Troopers statewide issued more than 64,000 citations and warnings. This included 5,513 citations for speeding; 720 seat belt and child safety restraint citations; 1,314 citations for no insurance; and 230 warnings and citations for Move Over, Slow Down violations. DPS also had 288 DWI arrests, 280 felony arrests and 155 fugitive arrests.
Don’t become a statistic in 2023! Use good judgment and make wise choices.
