Speeding Ticket Convictions in Corinth
Convictions for speeding tickets used to be a minor thing. Most people didn’t sweat a ticket in the past. However, since September 2003, the ball game changed. The Texas Legislature monetized the traffic ticket system statewide to provide revenue that was supposed to be used to fix our most needy hospitals across Texas. The remedy was called the surcharge program. The problem is that it has been a complete failure. However, it is still alive and well and penalizing people on a daily basis. The basics of the surcharge program are as follows:
-
Points are assessed for traffic convictions. Once the conviction has been added to the driver record, points are assigned and remain on the driver record for three years from the date of conviction.
- Two points are assessed for a Texas or out-of-state traffic conviction.
- Three points are assessed for a Texas or out-of-state traffic conviction that resulted in a crash.
NOTE: Points are not assessed for individuals who take defensive driving.
Individuals who have six or more points on their driver records are assessed a surcharge every year they maintain six or more points. Surcharges amounts are:
- $100 for the first six points on a driver record.
- $25 for each additional point after six.
If these surcharges are not paid, then the person’s license will be suspended until they are or that person qualifies for relief by providing DPS with proof that they are below the poverty line and cannot make payments.
As you can see, the surcharges are not cheap. In almost every single instance, the amount of money it would take to hire our experienced team of Corinth traffic ticket attorneys will be less than the penalties handed down by DPS.
